The Mule Rises in Foundation Season 3

Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for the third season of Foundation, the star-studded, visually lush, big-budget sci-fi series based on Isaac Asimov’s decades-old novel of the same name. The new trailer teases an entire galaxy hanging in the balance of a new crisis of astronomical scale and a new antagonist to match, one of Asimov’s most powerful and enigmatic villains: The Mule. Season 3 is slated to premiere on July 11, 2025, with weekly releases continuing through September 12.

Fans of both the Foundation books and the ongoing Apple series have had to wait a while for this new trailer. The show, which has taken considerable liberties with the source material and its cast of characters, has so far covered a sprawling period of centuries, with seasons 1 and 2 each punctuated by massive time jumps. The first season concluded with a 138-year leap forward, while the second season dealt largely with a moment of major upheaval and the galactic metanarrative called the Second Crisis. The Foundation dramatically reinvented itself as a weapon of psy-ops and propaganda to expand its sphere of influence, and the new, secretive colony of “Mentalics,” who possess various psionic abilities, was first introduced.

Season 3 of Foundation leaps forward by 152 years after the second season and sets the stage for what is called in the Asimov books the Third Crisis. In the official summary from Apple TV+, “The Foundation has grown more entrenched and powerful since its fledgling days in Foundation’s first season, while the once-formidable Cleonic Dynasty is starting to show signs of decline. Faced with threats both internal and external, the two once-rival powers are now forced to find new allies in each other as they look to stop a potential catalyst that could spell the end of all they’ve built: the arrival of The Mule, a warlord who wields not only incredible military might but also the ability to control minds.”

The trailer features the continuing use of Hari Seldon’s voiceover as a framing device for the coming action. “Centuries ago, when we predicted the fall of the galaxy, the Foundation was created to save humanity. But the coming darkness was always the turning point,” he says before the voice of Gaal Dornick picks up with an ominous warning of her own: “We’re out of time.”

Foundation has had a rotating cast of central and secondary antagonists. This time, it’s a new villain altogether in the form of The Mule, played by Pilou Asbæ k. The trailer and his role in the show so far suggest this is a villain who will present a unique and unsettling brand of threat. “I can turn enemies into allies. Hate into love,” The Mule says in the trailer, delivering his brand of chilling prophecy. “It only takes a little nudge.” Accompanied by explosions, fleet actions, and whole cityscapes collapsing on-screen, The Mule suggests an antagonist of unthinkable power.

Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann all return as the three imperial clones, Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk, respectively. Jared Harris will return in the central role of Hari Seldon, as will Lou Llobell as Gaal Dornick and Laura Birn as the powerful and mysterious android, Eto Demerzel.

Season 3 will feature a significant influx of new characters into the already crowded cast. Among them are Alexander Siddig as Dr. Ebling Mis, a Seldon worshiper and self-taught psychohistorian; Troy Kotsur as Preem Palver, who heads a planet of psychic humanoids; and Cherry Jones as Foundation ambassador Quent. Also on the list of new arrivals: Brandon P. Bell as Han Pritcher, Synnøve Karlsen as Bayta Mallow, Cody Fern as Toran Mallow, Tómas Lemarquis as the charismatic Magnifico Giganticus, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing as Song, and Leo Bill as Mayor Indbur.

Foundation: The Galaxy’s Hope in Jeopardy

Foundation’s overriding conceit has always been the idea of “psychohistory,” a fictional pseudo-science based on the application of mathematics and sociology to predict the macroscopic currents of history. This third season of Foundation now seems poised to throw that model into question. The Mule’s very ability to affect emotional response so disrupts logical predictions and accepted responses that the coming battle may be one of mere survival rather than odds and probabilities.

Visually, the series is starting to find its aesthetic. Lots of space vistas, gorgeously imagined futuristic civilizations, and interplanetary political chess all come with an epic table-setting and high-stakes action. But even among the universe-spanning architecture, what has stuck with me about the trailer is just how ominous the score is for this moment of arrival.

Can the Empire and the Foundation unite? Will psychohistory itself survive this most existential of crises? In all of Asimov’s different timelines and the futures he wrote and never got around to, is there any way the galaxy doesn’t end up enveloped by the worst-case scenarios?

Season 3 of Foundation may well tackle these questions with high stakes on an even grander scale and deeper characters in a world just as gorgeously realized. Fans of big-budget genre TV and speculative fiction in all of its forms have something to look forward to when episode 1 drops on July 11, 2025, on Apple TV+.
