Gareth Edwards Directs Jurassic World Rebirth Reboot

Universal Pictures has released the official final trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, the latest film in the Jurassic World series. The trailer comes just ahead of the film’s scheduled theatrical release this summer, set for July 2, 2025. It will be an interesting opening for the film, given that it’s over the Fourth of July weekend, when the July 4 holiday is a big one for blockbuster movies. Jurassic World Rebirth stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali and features a return to the original Jurassic Park research island and an attempt to pull off a heist for a new species, among other prehistoric action.

Jurassic World Rebirth is the fourth film in the Jurassic World franchise and the seventh film in the Jurassic Park franchise overall, which began in 1993 with Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. Gareth Edwards, who directed 2014’s Godzilla, is in the director’s chair for this new prehistoric epic, and the script was written by David Koepp, who has previously written for the franchise in Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park: The Lost World in 1997.

Official Synopsis

From the official synopsis, it sounds like the film will pick up five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, in which the Earth’s environment is so unlivable for dinosaurs that those who remain are only able to survive in shrinking equatorial “supertropics” that are as close to their native habitat as the remaining dinosaur population can get. In one such tropical biosphere, there exist the three largest dinosaurs in all categories of land, sea, and air, and all of them contain the genetic material for an unknown—and potentially lifesaving—drug.

Scarlett Johansson plays Zora Bennett, a professional in clandestine operations. In this role, she is sent to lead a team on a top-secret mission to obtain this genetic material. But during the mission, their operation collides with that of a civilian boating family on vacation, whose leisurely cruise is disrupted by an aquatic dinosaur attack. The survivors are left stranded on a long-deserted island that was once home to a covert Jurassic Park research outpost, and as it turns out, the island’s secrets run much deeper than any of the dinosaurs the team may have to face.

The Cast

The film stars an A-list cast, including Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, as well as Rupert Friend, who plays pharmaceutical rep Martin Krebs with nefarious ulterior motives, Jonathan Bailey as paleontologist Henry Loomis, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Reuben Delgado, a family man who leads the boating family that is left stranded. Luna Blaise, David Iacano, and Audrina Miranda play Reuben’s children, and Bechir Sylvain is a member of the clandestine team. Ed Skrein and Philippine Velge are also in the film in unknown roles.

Rebirth’s final trailer is a compilation of a lot of footage from its first trailer in February, but the important elements and highlights are still there, and they’re splashed out like new. It begins with a sequence in a lab where a worker is first downed by a dinosaur, then mauled by a T-Rex in a closed-door enclosure as he calls for help in a hazmat suit. This scene plays out in slow motion as the situation’s futility sets in, and from there, the trailer makes it clear that this won’t be a brainy prehistoric adventure but a full-on adrenaline-pumping thriller with some massive dinosaur kill.

The trailer reveals one of the biggest set pieces as a heist of a pterosaur egg, presumably a Quetzalcoatlus northropi egg, which is described as “a flying carnivore the size of an F-16.” This set piece is punctuated with all of the cinematic peril and desperation you could hope for in a high-concept, speculative modern dinosaur story. In terms of monsters, viewers get a nice mix of the famous raptors and some never-before-seen action with the mosasaur, an aquatic sea predator, and as one character notes, this island was purposefully populated with “the worst of the worst.”

As the new trailer reveals, this is considered a soft reset for the Jurassic Park franchise in a way, as it returns to the original Jurassic Park research island in the middle of a clutch of three titanic dinosaurs. As such, the team at Universal Pictures has made this new film both a callback to older films and a new chapter in the same franchise.

Jurassic World Rebirth will open in theaters on July 2, 2025.
