The Microsoft-owned software development platform GitHub revealed major changes to the pricing of its popular AI coding tool, GitHub Copilot. Friday’s announcement from the company introduced a “premium requests” system that places monthly usage caps on users who opt for advanced AI models to perform complex coding activities such as “agentic” coding and multi-file edits beyond the standard service.
GitHub Copilot subscribers will continue to have unlimited access to the base GPT-4o model but will now face monthly limits when using advanced models like Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet.
Understanding the New “Premium Request” System
Starting May 5th, Copilot Pro subscribers will have access to premium requests at the cost of $20 monthly. A monthly quota of 300 premium requests will be provided to these users. Between May 12th and May 19th, Copilot Business users will receive 300 premium requests monthly, while Copilot Enterprise users will be allocated 1,000 premium requests monthly.
GitHub offers users who expect to surpass their premium request limits the ability to buy extra requests at $0.04 each or move to their new Copilot Pro+ plan. Copilot Pro+ costs $39 monthly and delivers 1,500 premium requests with access to top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4.5.
GitHub Copilot changed its pricing model after AI coding platform Devin announced its rate increases for some users. The simultaneous developments in AI-assisted development platforms indicate that advanced AI models need substantial computational power, which is shaping emerging industry trends.
Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet model stands out for its improved fact-checking abilities, resulting in better suggestions at the cost of requiring more processing power and extended time. The substantial rise in computational expenses appears to be a primary driver behind GitHub’s move to create a premium request system.
The introduction of tiered access levels for advanced AI models has not diminished GitHub Copilot’s role as an essential revenue source for its parent company. During August of the previous year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reported that Copilot drove more than 40% of GitHub’s revenue growth for 2024. He illustrated Copilot’s swift achievement by pointing out that its current business scale exceeds what GitHub’s entire business was worth when Microsoft acquired it seven years ago. The software development community is quickly embracing AI-powered tools and is becoming increasingly dependent on them.
GitHub’s strategic enhancement of its AI assistant monetization model came through the introduction of premium requests. GitHub provides free access to basic models but charges users who want to use more advanced alternatives to meet different user requirements while respecting various budget constraints. Developers who use basic AI tools will not see any immediate differences in their experience. Users who utilize the enhanced reasoning and multi-file editing features of newer models should review their usage patterns to decide whether workflow adjustments or subscription plan upgrades are necessary.
Power users and development teams who depend heavily on the latest AI models for their daily work will find the new Copilot Pro+ tier appropriate due to its elevated monthly pricing and expanded premium request capacity. OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 features in this tier demonstrate its superior market position while providing top-tier AI code assistance services to users who seek the best performance.
GitHub has made significant progress in AI-powered development tools by launching premium requests for their high-performance AI models. Even though the cost increase affects some users, this pricing reflects the growing value and computational requirements of advanced technology systems. Developers will watch closely to understand how these alterations affect user patterns and the wider implementation of complex AI tools in coding projects.
