Hawkins Crew Prepares for Final Battle Against Vecna
Netflix has released an extended teaser trailer for the upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things, coming to the streaming service late this year. It delivers on fans’ wildest hopes, giving a preview of the final confrontation between Hawkins’ resident heroes and the terror of the Upside Down.
Right away, the teaser trailer sets the mood. It drops viewers into tense, jittery images of the Upside Down breaking into Hawkins proper, demo-dogs patrolling darkened hallways, and some explosive action sequences featuring flaming, ray-emitting weapons of mass destruction. One of the most memorable shots is the brief appearance of armed and battle-ready Linda Hamilton, who is seen entering Hawkins to fight alongside the original core cast.
Season 4 ended on a massive cliffhanger when Vecna—the demon villain pulling all of the strings behind all of the season’s horrors—opened a gate big enough for the Upside Down to start leaking out and into Hawkins proper. Season 5 of Stranger Things will jump forward in time, starting in the fall of 1987 (per the teaser) and landing on the third anniversary of Will Byers’ initial disappearance in Hawkins. Season 1, remember, kicked off with Will’s accident, so it makes sense to bring the series full circle with this date and start this new installment by checking in with Hawkins three years later.
Fans can expect eight episodes for this final season, and they won’t be “regular” episodes. Each season finale will be a feature-length episode, essentially giving eight full Stranger Things movies.
On a narrative level, the official synopsis does set up an expectation for big thrills and satisfying emotional moments. Hawkins is a changed place after the Rifts fully opened and merged the real world and the Upside Down. The heroes, old and new, are driven by one mission: find and kill Vecna. But they don’t know where to find him, and no one knows what he’s up to next. Meanwhile, things are about to get worse for the Hawkins crew when the U.S. government goes into full-blown military quarantine for the town and amps up the manhunt to catch Eleven.
As it turns out, the Hawkins crew will have to deal with all of this while the anniversary of Will’s disappearance looms large. The pressure is on for one of the worst reasons possible, and the teaser ends with a promise that the final battle is coming—and this time it’s darker, more intense, and deadlier than ever. The only chance Hawkins has is a full party—everyone coming together—for one last stand.
Expect the usual fan-favorite returning cast, plus some familiar faces for several important recurring characters. Amybeth McNulty will return to play Vicki, and Gabriella Pizzolo will be back as Suzie, Dustin’s girlfriend from the beginning of Stranger Things. Jamie Campbell Bower also reprises his role as Vecna, one of Season 4’s most memorable villainous presences.
The fifth season also introduces a number of new faces. Linda Hamilton joins the series as Dr. Kay, who we’ve seen before in action and is known for her tough-as-nails badassery. Hamilton is one of several new additions, with Nell Fisher joining as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, and Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers.
From an entertainment value standpoint, the teaser trailer drops a few key moments designed to get fans excited and fuel hot takes on a new level. One sequence in particular shows Lucas and others hiding from a group of demo-dogs, very much reminiscent of the Jurassic Park kitchen scene where the velociraptors preyed on everyone in their sight. For more of that sweet, sweet psychological horror, hearing Vecna’s raw, primal “found you” is bound to raise hairs across the board.
But perhaps the most powerful scene of the entire teaser is deceptively quiet, as the shot pans across Eddie Munson’s gravestone, which was revealed in the Season 4 finale to be a sad but necessary goodbye from the rest of the gang, despite his heroic sacrifice. There’s a single epithet on the stone that brings the entire series right back to Season 1 and dredges up the emotional heartbreak that has been missing from the show: “Burn in hell.” The fact that Eddie’s gravestone was vandalized in that way by other kids (seemingly) in Hawkins town is a heartbreaking reminder that, for many in the group, Eddie still has not redeemed himself as a hero.
That’s the thing, though: he did. The full truth of Eddie’s death in the finale of Stranger Things Season 4 is still a source of immense heartbreak, arguably the most heartbreaking since the death of Bob Newby in Season 2. Fans know, and eventually Hawkins will, too. Eddie’s death has left an indelible scar on every character in the cast, and the effects of that loss and injustice are sure to come into play across the season.
Teaser trailer fans are most likely going to be angry about the Season 5 structure. Netflix has announced that all eight episodes will be released in three separate volumes. That’s going to be frustrating for fans who would just binge the hell out of the conclusion in one go, but they might be glad to know that Netflix is sticking to a somewhat thematic release cadence to push that finale into one of the most emotional periods of the year.
Volume 1 of Stranger Things Season 5 will premiere on November 26, 2025. Volume 2 will drop one month later, on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025. The season finale, for maximum emotional impact, of course, will air on New Year’s Eve 2025, December 31.
In other words, the entire Hawkins adventure until its showdown will be dragged across the entirety of the holiday season and be a major pop culture conversation piece for all of that time.
