Florence County sheriff’s deputies have arrested nine teenagers in the June 24 fatal shooting of Trey Dean Wright, a 16-year-old from Johnsonville, South Carolina. According to a new arrest warrant, his death followed an argument “over a girl,” which one of the suspects secretly videotaped.
On June 24, Florence County sheriff’s deputies found Wright dead from multiple gunshot wounds on First Neck Road, just east of Johnsonville. The road is a rural highway about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. The next day, authorities arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway and charged him with murder and a firearms violation.
Raper allegedly shot and killed Wright following an argument in which the suspect, who had been hiding in the woods with a handgun, threatened to shoot the victim, according to a criminal complaint. Authorities believe that Raper was not acting alone, and in the weeks after the shooting, deputies announced arrests of additional teenagers, all of whom face charges as adults in connection with the death.
Prosecutors have charged nine teenagers with being accessories after the fact of murder in connection with Wright’s death, and his mother, Ashley Lindsey, is struggling with both the loss of her child and the legal process that has followed. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” Lindsey told Fox News Digital. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
Lindsey’s child’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach, is among the suspects arrested. She is accused of being a major player in luring Wright to a meeting with Raper, knowing that he had threatened to shoot the victim and had a handgun. Kistenmacher, who was arrested on July 22, has been charged with being an accessory before the fact to murder, a charge that is often referred to as procuring.
Major Michael Nunn with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office told WBTW-TV that Wright’s girlfriend was not alone in helping to set up the meeting. “They were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,” Nunn said. “They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.”
Florida’s prosecutors can charge juveniles as adults for serious crimes, including murder, and authorities say five of the nine suspects are being tried as adults. “The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” Nunn said.
Three teenagers from the Myrtle Beach area were later charged as adults with murder in addition to Raper. The suspects are 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns, all of Myrtle Beach. While Raper has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, Kendall and two other teens were charged directly with murder.
Sheriff T.J. Joye told reporters that the two teens who had previously fought were not supposed to see each other again, but that Raper was ready and waiting for Wright. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” Joye said. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Raper has been held without bond since his arrest, while Kendall has also been denied bond. The two other teens charged with murder were each released after posting $20,000 surety bonds last week.
The sheriff’s office has not provided further information about the case and did not respond to a request for comment. Prosecutors have declined to comment on the case, which remains under investigation. What is clear, however, is the extent of the pain felt by the victim’s mother.
Wright’s mother has been sharing her devastation on social media while also lamenting the protracted court hearings. As if losing her son were not enough, Lindsey also must grapple with the fact that her child’s girlfriend and several of his friends are implicated in his death.
The shooting has also raised questions about teenagers, their violent conflicts with each other, peer pressure, and how easily a simple argument can turn deadly when young people have easy access to guns.
The altercation between Raper and Wright has resulted in nine more teenagers in a Florida jail, two families broken, and a small South Carolina community asking how a fight over a girl could end in murder.
