Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Marks New Era for Malcolm X College West Side Campus
Malcolm X College commemorated the reopening of its expanded West Side campus on October 21, 2026, unveiling a major transformation marked by the inauguration of the newly renovated Danny K. Davis Community Center. School officials, city and state leaders, and community representatives attended the ribbon-cutting, celebrating a milestone in the college’s commitment to local education and workforce development.
A $20 Million Project for Community Empowerment
The college launched the $20 million expansion and renovation initiative in November 2024 at its satellite campus located at 4624 W. Madison St. The project’s completion introduces a modernized exterior, updated recreational and meeting spaces, an outdoor patio, and free parking. The facility, formerly known as the West Side Learning Center, was renamed the Danny K. Davis Community Center in August to honor the longtime U.S. representative’s support for the institution and its students.
Increased Student Capacity and Return to In-Person Learning
The West Side campus renovation allows Malcolm X College to increase its student capacity by 50%, now accommodating up to 2,000 students. The reopening also welcomes the return of in-person classes, aligning with the resumption of the second half of the fall semester for students across the City Colleges of Chicago system.
"For Malcolm X College, Congressman Davis was a pioneer, raising over $30 million to help students attend our college and have equitable support, academic assistance, and tuition aid—whatever they needed to succeed," said college president David Sanders during the event. Sanders highlighted that the improvements extend the opportunity for accessible, affordable education within the Austin and Garfield Park neighborhoods.
Facility Upgrades Aim to Meet Evolving Educational Needs
Barbara Meschino, dean of the West Side campus, emphasized the importance of adapting to the changing educational and workforce landscape. Before renovations, the building had an outdated appearance. The 3,000-square-foot expansion delivers modern amenities designed to encourage collaboration, learning, and community engagement—all essential to workforce readiness.
Students can now take prerequisite biology, math, or English courses and pursue programs in fields like nursing and community health. “Malcolm X College West Campus has been a long-standing part of this community, and this investment builds on that strong foundation,” Meschino said.
Community Voices Highlight Local Impact
Don Allen, a student in the college’s community health worker program and a student ambassador, spoke about the significance of the improvements. “My roots are here; I'm from the West Side,” Allen noted. He added that the newly updated campus will help make educational and career opportunities more accessible for area residents, fostering affordable education and workforce development in the Austin neighborhood and surrounding communities.
“Having a nearby place where residents can get an affordable education, develop new skills, and prepare for more meaningful jobs makes these opportunities more accessible,” Allen said.
A Commitment to Access and Growth
With the expanded west side campus and the Danny K. Davis Community Center, Malcolm X College aims to serve as a vital community hub. The campus renovation reaffirms the college’s mission to empower students through enhanced educational programs and expanded facilities, preparing them for academic and career success in a competitive workforce.
